FIFA to Monitor Iran’s Participation in 2026 World Cup Amidst U.S. Military Action

FIFA is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Iran following the commencement of military action by the United States, a co-host of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision comes as Iran has qualified for the tournament and is scheduled to play its group stage matches in the U.S.

U.S. Military Strikes and FIFA’s Response

On Saturday, February 28, 2026, President Donald Trump announced the launch of missile strikes against Iran, characterizing the operation as a “major combat operation.” FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom acknowledged the news and stated that the organization is taking the situation seriously.

“I read the news [about Iran] this morning the same way you did,” Grafstrom said at the International Football Association Board’s annual general meeting in Cardiff, Wales. “We had a meeting today and it is premature to comment in detail, but we will monitor developments around all issues around the world.”

Iran’s Group Stage Schedule

Iran was drawn into Group G for the 2026 World Cup, alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. They are slated to play two group stage games in Los Angeles and one in Seattle on June 26.

Focus on a Safe Tournament

FIFA’s primary focus remains on ensuring a safe and successful World Cup with the participation of all qualified teams. Grafstrom emphasized, “We had the finals draw in Washington in which all teams participated, and our focus is on a safe World Cup with all the teams participating.”

FIFA will maintain communication with the host governments – the United States, Mexico, and Canada – to address any concerns and ensure the safety of all participants. “We will continue to communicate as we always do with three [host] governments as we always do in any case. Everybody will be safe,” Grafstrom added.

Travel Restrictions

Existing travel restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, including a ban on visitors from Iran, remain in place, potentially impacting Iranian fans’ ability to attend the World Cup.
