Filipe Luís Sacked as Flamengo Manager Despite 8-0 Victory
Brazilian football club Flamengo has surprisingly parted ways with head coach Filipe Luís, despite a dominant 8-0 win against Madureira on Monday night. The decision, announced shortly after the match, comes less than three months after Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores triumph and highlights the intense pressure at one of Brazil’s most prominent clubs.
Recent Setbacks Prompted the Decision
While the recent victory secured Flamengo’s place in the Campeonato Carioca final against Fluminense, the club cited recent losses in the Supercopa do Brasil and CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana as key factors in the dismissal. Flamengo lost both finals, signaling a downturn in form after a successful 2025 season.
A Decorated Reign Cut Short
Filipe Luís, a former Chelsea and Atlético Madrid defender, took the helm at Flamengo in September 2024. During his tenure, he led the team to seven titles, including the 2025 Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Serie A championship. He averaged a trophy every 14 games during his 100 matches in charge. In December 2025, Luís signed a contract extension through December 2027, making his recent sacking all the more unexpected.
Looking Ahead: Potential Replacements
Speculation is already mounting regarding Luís’s replacement. Leonardo Jardim, with experience managing European clubs such as Monaco, Olympiakos, Sporting, and Braga, is being considered as a potential successor.
A Rapid Rise and Abrupt End
Filipe Luís’s managerial career began in 2024, initially with Flamengo’s youth teams (Under-17 and Under-20), where he secured league titles. His swift promotion to the first team and subsequent success had positioned him as a future candidate to manage the Brazilian national team. Though, the recent setbacks proved decisive, leading to a swift and unexpected end to his time as Flamengo manager.
As reported by the BBC, Luís made 333 appearances over two spells with Atletico Madrid either side of one season at Chelsea.
