Fire Point Develops Independent Navigation to Bypass Starlink Restrictions

Ukrainian arms manufacturer Fire Point has designed technical solutions that allow its systems to execute long-range strike missions without relying on SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communication network, company CEO Iryna Tereh announced in an interview with Reuters. Tereh stated that the systems were built from the ground up with potential satellite outages in mind, prioritizing autonomous navigation that functions independently of external signals.

The announcement follows a ten-day period in October when Ukraine faced speed restrictions on Starlink services that disrupted drone defense and strike operations. While Tereh declined to share specific technical details on how the company circumvents the satellite connectivity hurdles, she noted that current workarounds cover only a fraction of the weapons’ potential. “We found a way to technologically overcome this problem, but this covers, probably, only 15-20% of what we could do if Starlink was working over Russian territory,” Tereh said.

Tactical Missile FP-7 Deployed as Alternative Defense Asset

Alongside its navigation updates, Fire Point recently announced the combat deployment of its FP-7 tactical ballistic missile to strike a target in Russian-occupied Ukraine. Tereh explained that the missile features a range of approximately 300 kilometers and serves as an additional defensive tool for Ukrainian cities targeted by Russian shelling. She noted that deploying the FP-7 offers a more cost-effective alternative to utilizing expensive U.S.-built Patriot interceptor missiles against short-range threats like Iskander ballistic missile launchers.

In addition to the FP-7, the manufacturer is advancing development on a larger tactical system designated as the FP-9. Designed with an extended range of approximately 800 kilometers, the FP-9 presents greater engineering and testing complexities due to its distance capabilities. Company leadership anticipates bringing the longer-range system closer to operational readiness.

Investigative Push Follows Satellite Speed Caps in Ukraine

The debate over satellite connectivity intensified after Ukrainian forces encountered operational disruptions when the military-grade Starshield network experienced connection drops at speeds exceeding 160 kilometers per hour, hindering interceptor drones. Senator Richard Blumenthal subsequently initiated an inquiry into how Ukraine lost access to stable speeds. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk previously attributed the restrictions to Ukrainian military violations of usage terms.

Donald Trump stated on October 23 that Musk had lifted the speed caps, though Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and military officials initially reported continued limitations before confirming on October 24 that standard network speeds had been restored overnight. Despite the restoration, Fire Point continues to emphasize autonomous guidance systems to insulate future missions from sudden service interruptions.
