Stolen Olivier Award Returned to Fishamble Theatre Company
The Irish theatre company Fishamble has been reunited with its prestigious Olivier Award, which was stolen from their Dublin offices last weekend. The award, named “Larry,” was among several items taken from the company’s Great Denmark Street location on Saturday night.
In a statement released on Monday, Fishamble expressed their relief and gratitude: “We are delighted to report that the Olivier Award taken from the Fishamble office over the weekend has been returned. We very much appreciate all the messages of support received and are relieved to have Larry back home in its rightful place on the mantelpiece. As this is part of a wider and ongoing Garda investigation, we will not be making any further comment.”
A Recognition of Excellence
The Olivier Award was awarded to Fishamble and Pat Kinevane in 2016 for their acclaimed one-man show, Silent. Written and performed by Cork star Kinevane and directed by Jim Culleton, the production garnered significant critical acclaim.
The Olivier Awards, presented annually by the Society of London Theatre, recognize excellence in professional theatre in London. Fishamble’s win marked a historic moment, as they became the only Irish theatre company to receive this prestigious award for an Irish production.
“You put on plays in order to employ artists and to engage with audiences and to do the work,” said director Jim Culleton. “So the awards, in a way, aren’t the important thing, but when you get something like an Olivier Award – we’re the only Irish theatre company to have won one for an Irish production – it’s a real mark of achievement.”
Fishamble is funded by the Arts Council, Dublin City Council, and Culture Ireland.
