Flamengo Mobilizes in Brasília to Advocate for Tax Reform for Sports Clubs

The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, alongside key figures from the Brazilian Olympic Committee and national sports organizations, recently engaged with political leaders in Brasília to address tax concerns impacting Brazilian sports clubs. The initiative aims to reverse a tax penalty imposed on entities supporting Olympic sports within the country.

Key Players and Objectives

Leading the delegation was Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, the president of Flamengo. He was joined by Marco La Porta, president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee; Paulo Maciel, president of the Brazilian Club Committee; and the president of the National Confederation of Clubs. The group presented their case to members of the Sports Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, seeking a reversal of the current tax regulations.

Zico’s Participation Highlights Broad Support

Notably, Brazilian football legend Zico, a former Minister of Sports, participated in the meetings. His presence underscored the widespread support for the cause, emphasizing that the defense of sport transcends political administrations and is a matter of national importance.

Meetings with Government and Opposition Leaders

Following the initial meeting at the Sports Commission, representatives engaged in discussions with Randolfe Rodrigues, the government leader in Congress, and a leader from the opposition in the Senate. An agreement was signaled to vote to overturn the veto, potentially through a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that would guarantee tax immunity for sporting activities conducted by non-profit entities.

Engagement with the Presidential Administration

The delegation also met with Gleisi Hoffmann, Minister of the Institutional Relations Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic. Hoffmann listened to their concerns and pledged to bring the matter to the attention of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, affirming the federal government’s commitment to supporting Brazilian sport.

Ensuring Financial Sustainability for Sports Clubs

The core objective of this mobilization is to secure legal certainty and financial stability for clubs that invest in athlete development, maintain social projects, and reinvest their resources back into the country. The effort aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for Brazilian sports.
