New Mexico Village Grapples with Devastating Flash Floods, Multiple People Missing
Santa Fe, N.M. – A popular mountain retreat in southern New Mexico, Ruidoso, is facing a crisis after exceptionally intense monsoon rains triggered catastrophic flash flooding on tuesday. the deluge was powerful enough to dislodge an entire home, carrying it downstream, and has left at least three individuals unaccounted for.
the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management reported that emergency responders executed over 85 swift water rescues throughout the Ruidoso area. These rescues involved extracting individuals stranded in both their residences and vehicles, highlighting the sudden and widespread nature of the flooding. As of Wednesday morning, no fatalities have been confirmed, but a thorough assessment of the damage remains impossible until floodwaters subside.
“We anticipated flooding conditions,” stated ruidoso Mayor Lynn D. Crawford in a public address Tuesday evening, “but the severity of this event far exceeded our expectations.” The Mayor confirmed that several individuals required hospitalization, though the precise number remains unknown.Residents were strongly encouraged to utilize a dedicated emergency hotline to report missing loved ones or neighbors.
The recent disaster echoes the tragic events in Texas, where just days prior, over 100 lives were lost and more than 160 people remain missing due to similar flash flood conditions. According to the National Weather Service, flash floods are the most common type of flood in the United States, responsible for an average of 95 fatalities annually. The increasing frequency and intensity of these events are linked to climate change, with warmer temperatures leading to more moisture in the atmosphere and heavier rainfall.
The Rio Ruidoso experienced a dramatic surge in water levels Tuesday afternoon, prompting officials to issue urgent warnings for residents to evacuate to higher elevations. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the river rapidly overflowed its banks, inundating streets and properties. Cory State,an employee at Downshift Brewing company, reported that the establishment became a temporary shelter for dozens of residents seeking refuge from the rising waters and accompanying hail. He described the sight of the floating house as emblematic of the day’s widespread devastation.
One resident, speaking to local news, described the situation as “absolutely terrifying,” underscoring the emotional toll the disaster is taking on the community.
Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations, and a full damage assessment will be conducted once conditions allow. The focus remains on locating the missing individuals and providing support to those affected by this unprecedented flooding event.
