Flu Epidemic in the Netherlands Declines, But Remains Present

As temperatures commence to rise, the spread of influenza in the Netherlands is slowing, according to recent reports from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the Nivel research institute. While the annual flu epidemic appears to have passed its peak, health officials caution that the virus continues to circulate.

Peak Flu Activity Likely Over

Last week, the RIVM and Nivel concluded that the flu epidemic seems to have passed its peak, though they have not yet declared the epidemic officially over. Monitoring methods have recently shifted, with Nivel now tracking acute respiratory complaints, of which flu is a component, rather than solely focusing on flu-like symptoms.

Decreasing Viral Presence

Laboratory analysis of samples taken from patients visiting their doctors indicates a decline in the prevalence of the influenza virus. Last week, approximately one in three cases involved the flu virus, a decrease from over half of the samples tested the previous week. RIVM reports that 66 per 100,000 people consulted their GP for flu-like complaints last week, down from 71 the previous week.

Who is at Risk?

Influenza, caused by the influenza virus, presents with symptoms including coughing, fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, and muscle pain. While most individuals recover without medical intervention, certain populations are at higher risk of complications. These include individuals aged 60 and over, those with pre-existing lung conditions, and people with diabetes. The RIVM estimates that approximately 4,700 deaths occur annually in the Netherlands due to the consequences of influenza.

Current Situation and Previous Epidemics

The Netherlands officially entered a flu epidemic earlier this year, with GP visits for flu-like symptoms exceeding the threshold of 46 per 100,000 inhabitants for two consecutive weeks. DutchNews.nl reported numbers reaching 51 and 59 per 100,000. This year’s epidemic started a fortnight later than last year’s, which peaked at 118 people per 100,000 in early February 2025 and subsided by the complete of March.

Vaccination and Prevention

Individuals over the age of 60 and those with vulnerable health issues are offered annual flu vaccinations in the Netherlands, with a current uptake rate of around 55%. Health officials continue to advise individuals experiencing flu symptoms to stay home to prevent further spread.

Ongoing Monitoring

The RIVM continues to monitor the circulation of the influenza virus and other respiratory viruses. While signs indicate stabilization or a downward trend, the virus remains widespread, and vigilance is still advised.
