Bernie Sanders’ Brooklyn Roots and Vermont Rise Explored in New Book

BROOKLYN, NY – February 18, 2026 – A new book, Bernie for Burlington: The Rise of the People’s Politician, by Dan Chiasson, delves into the formative years of Senator Bernie Sanders, tracing his journey from his upbringing in Midwood, Brooklyn, to his political ascent in Vermont. The book launches February 19th at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with a celebration featuring author Jamaica Kincaid and the Bread and Puppet Theater.

From Brooklyn Boyhood to Vermont Politics

Chiasson’s work examines how Sanders’ early life experiences shaped his political ideology, and career. Sanders attended James Madison High School in Midwood, alongside future political figures Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Chuck Schumer, as well as Carole King and Judge Judy. During his senior year, he ran for student body president but finished third in the election. According to Chiasson, Sanders has suggested he might not have achieved the same level of political success had he remained in New York.

After moving to Vermont, Sanders served four terms as mayor of Burlington, becoming a prominent progressive voice in American politics. The book argues that his childhood, marked by financial struggles and the benefits of New Deal-era public infrastructure, profoundly influenced his political focus as mayor.

The Vermont Dream and its Realities

Chiasson explores Sanders’ vision of Vermont as an escape from the challenges of Brooklyn, a place offering a simpler life. However, he notes that this vision was quickly challenged by the reality of rural poverty and social tensions within the state. The book addresses instances of racism and antisemitism that Sanders encountered in Vermont, including antisemitism directed at him during his first mayoral race.

A Personal Connection to Burlington

Chiasson, who grew up in Burlington during Sanders’ time as mayor, draws on his personal experiences and observations throughout the book. He recalls Sanders campaigning door-to-door, even approaching a nine-year-old Chiasson for a vote. To fully understand Sanders’ background, Chiasson revisited Brooklyn, exploring his childhood neighborhood and high school.

The Launch Event at Pioneer Works

The February 19th launch event at Pioneer Works will feature a conversation between Chiasson and Jamaica Kincaid, alongside a performance by Bread and Puppet Theater. Attendees have the opportunity to pre-purchase a signed copy of Bernie for Burlington with their ticket. Tickets and more information are available on the Pioneer Works website. The event reflects the historical connection between New York and Vermont, a relationship that initially drew Sanders to the Green Mountain State. Event details can also be found on ThoughtGallery.org.
