The Intriguing World of Arak Bali: More Than Just a Strong Drink

Bali, the “Island of the Gods,” is renowned for its enchanting landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife. Among its many treasures is Arak Bali, a potent local spirit that holds significant cultural importance and is gaining popularity among tourists.

Arak Bali is more than just a strong drink; it’s deeply intertwined with the island’s heritage. In 2022, the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology designated it as an Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTb), acknowledging its deep-rooted traditions and significance in Balinese society.

Tourists visiting Bali often find themselves intrigued by this distinctive drink. Videos like the one from @caitriona_b on TikTok showcase the surprise and delight (and sometimes sheer shock) tourists experience upon tasting Arak Bali’s potent kick.

@caitriona_b That first sip of Bali’s locally made drink really does hit harder than expected every time 🤪🤪🤪 Must be super strong if a bunch of Irish can’t handle it ☘️ #balitravel #travelbali #baliindonesia #balibule #balilife #balinese #canggubali #warung #balicafe #balirecommendation #balirestaurant #irishabroad #irishtiktok #irishtravel #balirekomendasi #rekomendasi ♬ For videos! “That first sip of Bali’s locally made drink really does hit harder than expected every time 🤪🤪🤪 Must be super strong if a bunch of Irish can’t handle it,” she joked in the caption.

Online, many agree that Arak Bali packs a punch. “When I drink Arak Bali with my friend, we usually mix it with coke to reduce the strong taste of those liquors, that’s how Balinese handle Balinese arak,” shared one netizen. Another added, “Arak in our tradition, at least has 40% abv in it.”

The strength of Arak Bali truly depends on the distillation process. The first distillation yields the most potent ethanol alcohol, ranging from 45 to 55%, while the weakest Arak comes from the final distillation, clocking in at around 20%.

Bali Arak Day

Recognizing the cultural and economic significance of Arak Bali, Governor Wayan Koster issued Bali Governor Decree Number 929/03-I/HK/2022, designating January 29th as Bali Arak Day.
