“Forgotten Island” follows Jo, voiced by Grammy-winning singer H.E.R., and Raissa, voiced by Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano, as they embark on a final adventure together before heading their separate ways after high school. A mysterious portal transports them to Nakali, a fantastical island steeped in Filipino folklore. Their journey home hinges on a difficult choice: potentially sacrificing the memories of their shared past.

The trailer’s depiction of the sun as a central symbol resonated deeply with Soberano. “The first time I saw it, I cried,” she said, expressing her pride in seeing Filipino culture represented on the huge screen. H.E.R. Echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of the sun as a symbol within Filipino culture and its powerful impact on young viewers.
Directors Draw Inspiration from Personal Connection
The film is directed by Joel Crawford, known for his work on “The Croods: A New Age” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and Januel Mercado. Crawford and Mercado’s own long-standing friendship, which began on the set of Kung Fu Panda 2, served as a key inspiration for the film’s narrative. Crawford described Mercado as a kindred spirit, emphasizing the importance of friendship as the core theme of “Forgotten Island.”

Setting the story in the 1990s was a deliberate choice by the directors, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Mercado explained that although the decade holds personal significance for them, the underlying theme of cherishing memories is universally relatable. “If you feel what we’re feeling, you’ll connect to that and remember what’s nostalgic for you,” he stated.

“Forgotten Island” features a voice cast including Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, and Lea Salonga. The film is scheduled to arrive in Philippine cinemas on September 23, 2026.
