Formula E Founder Urges Formula 1 to ‘Return to What It Was’ After Hearing Max Verstappen’s Fury

Alberto Longo, co-founder of Formula E, has expressed surprise and concern over Formula 1’s recent regulatory changes, aligning with criticisms voiced by drivers like Max Verstappen. Longo believes F1 is moving in a direction that mirrors Formula E’s approach, potentially diminishing the unique appeal of both series.

Longo Calls for a Return to Traditional F1 Racing

Speaking to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Longo questioned the rationale behind F1’s shift towards a more hybrid-oriented racing style. He stated, “Frankly, I don’t really understand what Formula 1 is doing… I don’t understand why F1 is increasingly pulling a little more towards our way of racing.” He expressed confidence that F1 will ultimately revert to its traditional format, arguing that the current hybrid approach “makes no sense” and is not resonating with drivers.

Longo highlighted the confusion among drivers, citing Verstappen’s recent complaints about his championship car as a critical indicator. “Hearing Verstappen talk like this about his own championship is something that F1 cannot consent to, so I understand that it will reverse, they will return to combustion and be loyal to the way they race,” he said.

Formula E’s Distinctive Identity

Longo emphasized Formula E’s original intention to attract new fans with a unique racing experience. He believes the new F1 regulations blur the lines between the two series, diminishing the distinctiveness of each. “When we created this championship (in 2014), we did it with the intention of attracting new people to this sport with races that had never been seen before,” Longo explained. He further stated that Formula E offers “a completely different thing” – a focus on energy efficiency rather than pure performance, which has historically appealed to racing fans.

Verstappen’s Concerns and FIA Response

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula One World Drivers’ Champion, has been vocal in his criticism of the new regulations, even labeling them a “joke.” Lando Norris of McLaren also described the regulations as “artificial” following the Australian Grand Prix. While Verstappen has attempted to engage with the FIA to propose changes, there has been no public announcement regarding the reception of his concerns.

The FIA is expected to discuss potential adjustments during the five-week break in the 2026 season, necessitated by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It remains to be seen whether these discussions will lead to modifications aimed at addressing both driver and fan concerns.

Lando Norris’s Championship Defense

With Lando Norris winning the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 2025, the question arises whether his title defense will be hampered by the new regulations. Norris secured 11 Grand Prix wins across eight seasons and his performance in 2026 will be closely watched as teams adapt to the evolving rules.
