Fortnite Removes Peacemaker Emote After Shocking Plot Twist

James Gunn captivated audiences with the season 1 musical intro too Peacemaker where the whole cast performs an absurd 1980s rock-inspired dance sequence with deadly serious faces. A video of the sequence set to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” has accumulated more than 20 million views on YouTube. So Gunn sought to match that energy in Peacemaker season 2 with a new opening dance sequence set to Foxy Shazam’s “Oh Lord.”

Fortnite sought to tap into the excitement of the Peacemaker season 2 debut in August with the launch of a Peacemaker cosmetics set and a “peaceful hips” emote based on the first few seconds of the intro performed by Peacemaker (John Cena). Though, Epic Games announced on Sept. 28 that it was disabling the emote and issuing refunds as it tries to ascertain the intentions behind the dance moves considering the big twist in season 2 episode 6, “Ignorance Is Chris.”

Epic Games will modify the “Peaceful Hips” emote in *Fortnite* after discussions with Warner Bros., following scrutiny over potential Nazi imagery within the dance’s choreography. The emote was created in collaboration with John cena to promote the HBO Max series *Peacemaker*.

The controversy stems from connections made between the dance and plot points revealed in the show’s second season. *Peacemaker* features a storyline involving an alternate dimension, revealed in episode 6 to be Earth-X, a DC Comics universe where the Nazis won World War II. Fans noticed that certain movements in the emote, notably Cena’s arm flapping, briefly resemble a swastika. Additionally, a flexing and thrusting arm gesture was interpreted as a “Sieg Heil” salute. The Earth-X inhabitants in the intro sequence replicate the swastika-like arm gestures, further fueling speculation that choreographer Charissa Barton intentionally embedded clues about the season’s twist within the dance moves. GamesRadar+ and Polygon detailed the fan theories and analysis of the dance.

Epic Games addressed the concerns on its Fortnite Status X account, stating, “We’ve worked closely with our partners at Warner Bros. Games to confirm there were no creative intentions to connect the Peaceful Hips Emote and the current *Peacemaker* storyline.”

The company added that it will be modifying the emote’s choreography in an upcoming update. Players who purchased the emote will have the option to receive a refund without using a ticket.
