Tragic 24 Hours on Irish Roads Claims 4 Lives

Friday saw a devastating wave of road traffic accidents in Ireland, claiming the lives of four people in a harrowing 24-hour period.

Fatal Crash in Co Armagh

The first tragedy unfolded in Co Armagh shortly before 12:45 pm on Friday. A collision involving a dark grey Audi and a black Mercedes occurred on the Killylea Road outside Killylea. Tragically, both male drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from partner emergency services,” said PSNI Inspector Cherith Adair from the force’s collision investigation unit. “Both men died at the scene.”

Four other individuals, including a baby, were transported to hospitals for medical treatment. One woman suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

The Killylea Road, initially closed off, has since fully reopened.

Police are urging anyone with information, including dash-cam footage, to come forward and assist their investigation.

Pedestrian Fatalities in Co Meath and Co Carlow

Separately, a pedestrian in his 60s was fatally struck by a car in the Flowerhill area of Navan, Co Meath, around 10:40 pm that same Friday. The driver, also a man in his 60s, was unharmed.

In a third incident, a woman in her 70s was tragically killed in Co Carlow after being struck by a car on the N80 in the Rathcrogue townland around 6:30 pm on Friday.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, uninjured.

In both these cases, the roads remain closed while Gardaí conduct technical examinations. They are appealing to anyone with dashcam footage from those areas to share it with them.
