Illegal Animal Breeding Farm Dismantled in Var, France: Hundreds of Animals Rescued
A large-scale operation carried out by the gendarmes in the Var department of southern France, in collaboration with the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP) and the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA), has led to the dismantling of an illegal animal breeding farm and the rescue of over 800 animals.
Unworthy Conditions Discovered
The investigation revealed that a couple was illegally raising a significant number of animals in conditions deemed unacceptable. The animals included dogs, rabbits, birds, goats, pigs, guinea fowl, chickens, and parakeets.
According to squadron leader Raphael Michilineau, the conditions were appalling. “We were taken by the smell of animal excrement. These are places devoid of natural light and ventilation. We were able to notice several cages, and in each of them, we could find 5-6 puppies crowded inside,” he explained. “They were literally trampling on each other. Caresses were not part of their daily life.”
820 Animals Saved
A total of 820 animals were rescued and taken into care. The breakdown of rescued animals is as follows: 237 dogs, 268 rabbits, 267 pigeons, 5 goats, 2 pigs, 9 guinea fowl, 12 chickens and roosters, and 19 parakeets. These animals will receive necessary treatment and, where possible, will be offered for adoption.
Financial Flows Under Investigation
Authorities are investigating significant financial flows linked to the illegal operation. Between 2020 and 2026, approximately 200,000 euros were identified as having been transferred to those involved.
