Francesco Renga Returns to Sanremo with a Song of Emotional Responsibility
Francesco Renga is set to compete in the 76th Sanremo Music Festival in February 2026, marking his eleventh participation in the iconic Italian song contest. Renga, who turns 57 this year, will perform “Il meglio di me” (“The Best of Me”), a song he describes as an invitation to emotional responsibility.
A Journey Through Sanremo
Renga’s history with Sanremo is extensive. He previously triumphed in 2005 with “Angelo,” a song dedicated to his daughter with Amber Angiolini. Reflecting on that win, Renga recalled being persuaded to participate by then-host Bonolis, as the success of his album and single had been unexpected. He as well participated with the band Timoria in 1991.
Recent Beginnings and Artistic Evolution
This year’s participation feels particularly significant for Renga, representing a fresh start with a new record label. He characterizes the current music landscape as one where artists often hide vulnerabilities and his song aims to challenge that tendency. “We live in a time in which we are used to hiding what doesn’t work for fear of collapsing. Instead I believe that by looking at that worst part of us we can really change,” Renga explained.
Confronting the Past
Renga’s song and his reflections extend to personal experiences, including a childhood trauma – the loss of his mother at age 17 – which he says shaped his relationships and led to a pattern of escape. He acknowledges past difficulties in his relationship with Amber Angiolini, stating, “Yes… We hurt each other… It wasn’t easy, but now we have resolved everything.” He also references the dissolution of the Timoria band as another form of escape.
Rock Roots and a Changing Market
Renga reminisced about Timoria’s controversial appearance at Sanremo in 1991, recalling how their rock sound was initially met with skepticism but ultimately earned them a critics’ prize. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by artists of his generation in adapting to the evolving music market, admitting to making “crazy stupid things” in attempts to stay relevant. He believes his new song strikes a balance between his established vocal style and more contemporary songwriting.
Sanremo as a Reflection
Renga now views the Sanremo Festival not as a place to escape, but as a space for self-awareness and genuine connection. The 76th Sanremo Music Festival will be held at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo from February 24th to 28th, 2026, and will be presented by Carlo Conti and Laura Pausini.
