Digital Comic Lehrmaterialien Now Available for North Rhine-Westphalia Educators and Students

Cologne, Germany – A new suite of free digital learning materials focused on comics, manga, graphic novels, and sequential art is now available to educators and students in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Developed collaboratively by universities across the region, the resources are accessible through the state portal ORCA.nrw.

Comprehensive Courses for Diverse Learners

The project, known as Comicforschung.nrw, offers four comprehensive courses designed to cater to a range of interests and skill levels:

• Comic History: Explores the evolution of comics from their origins to contemporary forms.
• Comics Analysis: Provides methods for deconstructing and interpreting the visual and narrative elements of comics.
• Comics Research: Introduces research approaches and methodologies within the field of comics studies.
• Comics Didactics: Specifically geared towards educators, this course offers practical guidance on integrating comics into the classroom, particularly within German language arts instruction.

Interactive and Accessible Learning Experience

These digital materials go beyond traditional textbooks, incorporating a variety of interactive elements to enhance the learning experience. According to Dr. Nina Eckhoff-Heindl of the University of Cologne, the courses include “interactive exercises, videos, podcasts, diagrams and more, much of which was designed specifically for our project.” Regional Update

Collaboration and Funding

Comicforschung.nrw is the result of a collaborative effort between universities in Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf, and Duisburg-Essen, building upon the network “Comicforschung am Rhein.” Comicforschung am Rhein The project received funding from the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia through the OERContent.nrw initiative, which supports the development of open educational resources.

Open Licensing and Future Development

The content is openly licensed, allowing educators to freely utilize and adapt the materials to suit their specific teaching needs. Project leaders encourage widespread adoption and further development of the resources. Prof. Dr. Stephan Packard, project manager at the University of Cologne, expressed hope that “the material [will] be used in a variety of ways, used in different subjects and further developed.” Regional Update Updates and expansions to the course offerings are planned and will be made available on the ORCA.nrw portal.
