Florence Lassarade Launches Opposition to Incumbent Mayor in Langon
Florence Lassarade, the Senator for Gironde and president of the Les Républicains party in the region, has announced her candidacy for mayor of Langon, challenging incumbent Jérôme Guillem in the upcoming municipal elections. The move sets the stage for a contested race as Langon prepares to elect its next leader.
A Challenge to the Status Quo
Guillem, the current socialist mayor, had previously indicated his intention to seek re-election. Yet, he lacked a declared opponent until Lassarade stepped forward. Didier Sendrès, a long-time opposition councilor, had previously expressed the need for a challenger to ensure a balanced democratic process in the city.
Lassarade’s Background and Political Experience
Lassarade brings a wealth of political experience to the race. A trained pediatrician, she was first elected as Senator of Gironde in 2017 and re-elected in 2020. She has been a member of the UMP (now Les Républicains) for nearly two decades and also serves as a councilor in Saint-Macaire since 2008. Her late husband, François Lassarade, was a former member of the Langon municipal council, representing the opposition.
Recent Election Results in Gironde
Recent municipal elections in Gironde have shown varying degrees of success for different parties. In La Réole, outgoing mayor Bruno Marty (Place Publique) secured a decisive victory with 66% of the votes against Rémy Berthonneau of the National Rally. The National Rally list of François-Xavier Marques received 22.03% of the votes, earning them four seats, while Lassarade’s Les Républicains secured only one seat with 10.62% of the vote. In Bazas, Isabelle Dexpert won 100% of the votes, and in La Brède, Michel Dufranc and his Divers Droits list also achieved a 100% vote share. Sauveterre-de-Guyenne saw Christophe Miqueu (Miscellaneous left) re-elected with 63.08% of the votes.
Looking Ahead
Lassarade’s candidacy introduces a significant challenge to Guillem’s leadership in Langon. The election is expected to be closely watched as a barometer of the political landscape in Gironde. The National Rally, having gained a foothold in several municipalities, will also be a key player to observe in future elections.
