Investigation Launched Into Alleged Murders of Soldiers in Toulon
French judicial authorities have opened a major criminal investigation in Toulon following allegations that a local family kidnapped, abused, and murdered multiple military personnel. Five members of the same family were indicted in late May, according to a statement from the Toulon public prosecutor’s office.
The investigation concerns the treatment of several soldiers from France’s overseas territories who were allegedly held against their will by the family between 2011 and 2025.
Criminal Charges and Judicial Status
Following a 96-hour police custody period under specialized organized crime protocols, five family members were brought before a magistrate. According to the Toulon prosecutor, the father, mother, two sons, and one daughter face charges including human trafficking and kidnapping committed as an organized gang.
The mother and the two sons are additionally charged with the murders of two missing soldiers. All five individuals have been placed in pre-trial detention. The youngest daughter was indicted for failing to report crimes and remains under judicial supervision. All suspects are presumed innocent and have either contested or minimized the allegations.
Status of the Missing Soldiers

The criminal inquiry centers on the disappearances of two specific service members. Investigators are currently analyzing skeletal remains discovered at two sites in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, which authorities suspect may belong to the missing men. As of the latest update from the prosecutor’s office, formal identification of the remains is still pending.
The two individuals identified in the investigation are:
- Mike Gineste: A Tahitian-born legionnaire with the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment, who has been missing since 2023.
- Jacques Pakeso: A New Caledonian native and candidate for the French Navy, reported missing in Toulon in May 2022.
Beyond the two murder cases, seven other soldiers from the Pacific region have come forward, alleging they were stripped of their belongings, subjected to violence, and held captive while being hosted by the family.
Allegations of Broader Violence
Reports indicate that the family’s alleged pattern of violence extended beyond the soldiers they hosted. According to reporting by ICI Provence, the sons were frequently involved in altercations in Toulon’s city center, leading to their exclusion from a bar near the Place de l’Équerre.
The family allegedly retaliated against a barman from that establishment. Prosecutors are examining claims that the mother and her two sons followed the employee after his shift, physically restraining him while the mother allegedly struck him in the face with a baseball bat. The victim required medical treatment, including stitches, following the encounter.
What Happens Next?
The judicial investigation remains active under the direction of an instructing magistrate.
