Friday Night Lights Returns Home with a Peacock Reboot

Get ready for another round of Texas high school football! Peacock has won a bidding war for a reboot of the beloved series *Friday Night Lights*, keeping the fandom within the NBCUniversal family.

Details about the new version revealed. Universal Television, who produced the original series, is behind the reboot. Series creator and pilot director Peter Berg, showrunner Jason Katims, and executive producer Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment are all on board as executive producers. Katims will once again be the showrunner.

A New Chapter for Dillon?

The logline for the new *FNL* sets the stage for a fresh story: “Following a devastating hurricane, a ragtag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas high school state championship, becoming a beacon of light for their town.” This description suggests the reboot might move away from the original show’s fictional hometown of Dillon, Texas, which doesn’t seem like a hurricane-prone location.

Remembering the Original

For those who haven’t experienced the magic of *Friday Night Lights*, the original series, which ran from 2006 to 2011, was inspired by H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger’s 1990 nonfiction book about the football team at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. Berg directed and co-wrote the popular 2004 feature film adaptation of the book before creating the series.

The original series, starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, launched the careers of several actors, including Jesse Plemons, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly, Gaius Charles, Scott Porter, Aimee Teegarden, Adrianne Palicki, and Michael B. Jordan. While it wasn’t a huge ratings hit, *Friday Night Lights* garnered critical acclaim and a devoted following. The series boasts three Emmy Awards, including a win for Chandler as best lead actor in a drama and one for Katims’ writing in its final season.

Can’t wait for more Friday Night Lights?

Stay tuned for updates on the Peacock reboot! Maybe the new *Friday Night Lights* will inspire a trip to Texas to experience the high school football scene for yourself.
