Auld Lehane Returns to Cheltenham: A Steeplechase Comeback

Veteran jockey Auld Lehane has announced his return to competitive steeplechase racing, setting his sights on the prestigious Cheltenham Festival in 2026. The decision comes after a recent setback in securing a stocking loan, leading Lehane to seek income through his proven talent in horse racing.

From Banking Woes to the Racecourse

A recent visit to Cattle Bank & Trust in Seward, Nebraska, proved unfruitful for Lehane, who was seeking financial assistance. According to reports, the bank manager suggested the only way Lehane would receive funds was “by robbing us!” citing the high cost of cattle and comparing the market to the “Celtic Tiger” era. Cattle Bank & Trust, chartered in 1873, serves Nebraska with a focus on community banking.

Faced with financial hardship, Lehane has dusted off his saddle and is preparing for Cheltenham. He acknowledges that while he may appear an unlikely candidate – “too old, stupid, and overweight to throw his leg over anything more flighty than a bar stool” – he possesses a remarkable track record of success.

A History of Winning

Lehane confidently asserts his ability to win, comparing his skill to that of legendary jockey Lester Piggott, and even suggesting he may be better. He believes his presence in a race almost guarantees victory, regardless of the horse’s condition – “Regardless of how useless the horse was, if he has three legs instead of four, we would still be first across the line.”

Cheltenham 2026: The Lineup

Lehane has confirmed his participation in multiple races at Cheltenham, including the Ryanair Chase aboard Flying High! and the Queen Mother Champion Stakes riding Andrew You Tool. He emphasizes that the appeal of Cheltenham lies in the possibility of anyone winning, but remains confident in his own abilities.

Despite his anticipated success, Lehane requests that spectators refrain from excessive cheering, finding it “tiresome after a full day of unbridled success.” He intends to lead the pack, stating, “Look out for me at Cheltenham next week, I’ll be out in front.”
