A 50-kilometer cycling journey along Sicily’s Ionian coast has become a powerful demonstration of inclusion, resilience, and the therapeutic benefits of sport for individuals with neurological disabilities. Six employees of the IRCCS “Bonino Pulejo” Neurolesi Center in Messina accompanied two blind cyclists from Taormina to Messina on tandem bicycles. The initiative underscores the center’s commitment to utilizing sport as a tool for rehabilitation and social integration.

A Collaborative Ride for Inclusion

The ride was part of a larger cycling tour of Sicily led by cyclists Chiara Ozino and Giusy parisi, with a strong focus on inclusion. Managers and healthcare workers from the IRCCS joined the pair, supporting them along a challenging route organized by the soroptimist of Messina. The tandem bikes themselves symbolized the trust and collaboration central to the event, navigating climbs and curves with determination and teamwork.

“This journey was not just a sporting gesture, but an act of sharing and hope,” stated IRCCS Director General Lanza Bonino Pulejo. “Sport, in our vision, is an integral part of the rehabilitation process. It’s not just about recovering motor functionality, but about restoring dignity, autonomy and a sense of belonging to people who face a disability.”

IRCCS Bonino Pulejo: A Leader in Neurological Rehabilitation

The IRCCS Bonino Pulejo Neurolesi Center has long been a national reference point for neurological rehabilitation in Italy. The center integrates physical and sporting activity into its therapeutic protocols, recognizing the holistic benefits of exercise for patients. The institute actively collaborates with the Italian Paralympic Committee (https://www.paralympic.it/) to provide opportunities for social reintegration through sport, supporting patients both in the immediate post-acute phase and for long-term well-being.

Beyond the Ride: raising Awareness for Accessibility

This tandem initiative is part of a broader project aimed at raising awareness about accessibility and inclusion. The goal is to demonstrate that, with appropriate support, individuals can overcome significant barriers. Director Bonino Pulejo highlighted the ride as a continuation of the center’s efforts, following a successful Strait crossing in July with patients participating as athletes.

“We want to build a sports and health network that puts the person, their potential and their right to live fully, beyond disability, at the center,” the Director concluded.

This event exemplifies the growing recognition of the importance of adaptive sports and inclusive initiatives in fostering well-being and challenging societal perceptions of disability. The IRCCS Bonino Pulejo’s continued commitment to these programs promises to further expand opportunities for individuals with neurological conditions to lead active and fulfilling lives.
