Ireland Mourns the Loss of Showband Legend Dickie Rock

Ireland’s music scene is in mourning as fans and fellow musicians say goodbye to Dickie Rock, the legendary singer who passed away last week at the age of 88.

A requiem mass was held today at the Church of the Most Precious Blood in Cabra West, with the coffin carrying Rock’s remains carried inside to the sound of his timeless hit “Come Back to Stay”.

A Lasting Legacy as Ireland’s First Pop Superstar

Dickie Rock was undeniably Ireland’s first pop superstar. During his celebrated time with the Miami Showband, he achieved massive success with over a dozen chart-topping records, including unforgettable classics like “Georgie Porgie”, “Every Step of the Way”, and “From The Candystore on the Corner”. One of their most enduring hits, “To Whom It Concerns”, became the signature tune of RTE’s iconic “The Late Late Show”.

Remembering a Life Dedicated to Music and Happiness

The requiem mass was celebrated by Fr Brian D’Arcy, a close friend of Rock, and Fr Paul Thornton. Among the gifts presented at the altar were a microphone, a powerful symbol of Rock’s musical career, and a photograph of Dickie with his beloved wife Judy, who passed away in 2022.

Fr D’Arcy eloquently spoke about the profound impact Rock had on countless lives. He emphasized Rock’s unwavering dedication to making people happy through his music, stating, “The only thing Dickie had wanted to do in life was to make people happy, and he used the voice and the talent that God had given him to do that.”

The Showband Era: A Symbol of Hope and Transformation

Fr D’Arcy reflected on the significant role the showband era played in Irish society, describing how it helped lift the country from a period of darkness.

“With the bands,” he said, “had come electricity, cars and the opening up of dance halls allowing people to get out of their own areas, be themselves and meet others.”

A Loving Father and a Musical Legacy

Dickie Rock was a father of six, and his son Joseph, who sadly pre-deceased him, was fondly remembered at the funeral. Dickie’s son, Peter Rock, shared heartfelt words about his father, describing him as a loving and caring parent who was more than just the renowned performer. Peter spoke about his father’s strength in dealing with his own grief after Joseph’s passing to support his family and the profound loss he experienced with the death of his beloved wife, Judy.

“She was the love of his life, and he was never the same after,” Peter revealed.

Peter concluded by expressing his immense pride in his dad and all that he had accomplished.

Mourners Pay Their Respects

Dickie Rock’s funeral service was attended by a multitude of mourners, including prominent figures from the Irish music industry, like producer and presenter Aonghus McAnally, fellow showband performer Ronan Collins, and Liveline presenter Joe Duffy. President Michael D. Higgins was represented by his Aide-de-Camp, Paul O’Donnell.

Dickie Rock’s music will forever remain a treasured part of Irish cultural history.
