Gabriel Basso Deletes Instagram After Existential Crisis Over Mount Everest Photo
Gabriel Basso, known for his role in Netflix’s The Night Agent, recently deleted his Instagram account, but not due to online harassment or the pressures of fame – a common reason for celebrities leaving social media. Basso’s reasoning stems from a surprising existential realization sparked by a photograph of Mount Everest.
The Mount Everest Revelation
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Basso explained that his decision was “pretty instantaneous” and occurred while “doom-scrolling.” He recounted seeing a picture from the summit of Mount Everest and being disturbed by the ease with which he could access such a hard-won view.
“I saw a picture from the top of Mount Everest. I was like, ‘Wow, this is elegant.’ Then I stopped and I was like, ‘Wait, what? Why do I now know what that looks like?’” Basso said. He expressed frustration that someone had overcome immense challenges – “stepped over literal, like, bodies” – to reach the summit, only for him to experience the view effortlessly from his couch. He felt he hadn’t “earned” the visual.
A Desire for Authentic Experience
Basso’s reaction highlights a discomfort with the accessibility of experiences through social media. He stated, “It bothered me that I had that image in my head now without any effort, you know, to earn that visual. I was like, ‘Dude, screw this whole platform.’” He added that he simply wants to “mind my own business” and is “sick of everyone else’s business being my business.”
The Broader Context of Social Media and Experience
While Basso’s reasoning is unique, it touches on a broader debate about the impact of social media on our perception of experience. He believes that achieving something like climbing Mount Everest should be a personal, unshared accomplishment – “If you make it to the top of Mount Everest, that should be yours.”
This sentiment echoes a long-standing tension between the desire to share experiences and the value of private, unmediated moments. Even before social media, images and documentaries have brought distant places and achievements into our homes. However, Basso’s point centers on the intent and the feeling of effortless consumption that social media facilitates.
Basso’s Choice and the Pursuit of Contentment
Basso’s decision to delete Instagram reflects a personal choice to remove something from his life that he found unsatisfying. He hopes to discover more contentment by disconnecting from the constant stream of shared experiences and focusing on his own.
