For the Family: Gabriele Frangipani Embodies The Godfather to Honor Late Grandmother

Italian figure skater Gabriele Frangipani delivered a deeply personal performance at the 2026 World Championships, skating his free program to music from The Godfather soundtrack as a tribute to his late grandmother. The 24-year-old athlete, born in Pisa and raised in Bolzano, used the emotional resonance of Nino Rota’s compositions to connect with his family heritage during one of the season’s most significant competitions.

Frangipani’s free skating routine, set to excerpts including “The Godfather Waltz,” “The Immigrant,” “Speak Softly Love,” and “Tarantella,” earned him a season-best score of 166.93 points at the ISU Grand Prix NHK Trophy in November 2025. This performance contributed to his season’s highest total score of 207.07, achieved at the 2026 World Championships in March, where he also recorded a personal-best short program score of 76.89.

The skater, who trains under coaches Fabio Mascarello, Giulia Cotugno, and Marilu Guarnieri with the Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro club, has consistently cited family as a driving force in his career. His tribute follows a season in which he competed at multiple ISU Championships, including a fourth-place finish at the 2024 European Championships — his highest placement at the continental level.

Frangipani, a student and part-time police officer, began skating in 2010 and has since become a five-time Italian national medalist (one silver, four bronze) and a five-time ISU Challenger Series medalist (two gold, three silver). He represented Italy at the junior level with two national junior titles (2019–20) before transitioning to senior competition.

Speaking after his performance, Frangipani emphasized the rarity and significance of competing on major international stages, describing the experience as meaningful despite not feeling ideally prepared. He noted the value of sharing the ice with elite skaters such as Ilia Malinin in front of sold-out crowds, calling such moments irreplaceable.

As of the 2025–2026 season, Frangipani’s personal best total score stands at 251.59, set at the ISU Grand Prix Cup of China in November 2023. His highest short program score is 87.39 (Ondrej Nepela Memorial, 2022), and his top free skating mark is 166.93 (Nebelhorn Trophy, 2024).

Through his artistic choice of music and heartfelt dedication, Gabriele Frangipani transformed his athletic performance into a familial homage — blending sport, memory, and melody on the world stage.
