Galway United Winger Kyle Fitzgerald Joins Newcastle United Academy
English Premier League side Newcastle United have strengthened their youth ranks with the capture of 18-year-old Irish winger Kyle Fitzgerald from Galway United. Fitzgerald, who follows in the footsteps of fellow Irishman Alex Murphy who joined the Magpies in 2022, brings further proof of Galway’s thriving academy and its ability to nurture talented footballers that attract interest across the Irish Sea.
Fitzgerald’s journey to St. James’ Park began at the tender age of 14 when he joined Galway United after honing his skills with Mervue United.
“From the moment Newcastle came in, it was a clear choice,” said Fitzgerald. “My trial last summer went really well, and it felt great when they offered me the chance to join permanently. Their academy, the impression of playing at St. James’ Park – it’s fantastic. Playing for fans dedicated to hard-working, goal-scoring, creative individuals is very attractive. I genuinely believe in Newcastle and their project."
He went on to praise the efforts of Head of Youth Recruitment Steve Harper and Paul Midgley, highlighting their clear vision for young players like himself and Alex Murphy, who have navigated the same pathway from Galway.
"I watched Alex Murphy with admiration, hoping to emulate him," Fitzgerald continued. "To be honest, we went to the same school, although I was much younger. Alex always impressed me, even when I was struggling in the Galway Academy. Hopefully, I can follow a similar path. Short-term, I want to work hard and show what I can do. Obviously, getting assists, scoring goals, winning games is important."
Looking further ahead, Fitzgerald is focused on breaking into the Under-21 squad and proving his worth to the coaching staff.
"Long-term, it’s about establishing myself in the Under-21s and showcasing my ability. Hopefully, catching the manager’s eye in training sessions for a chance to step up to the first team.
"Am I dreaming of making my Premier League debut for Newcastle? Why not?" He declared confidently, "I’ve always wanted this opportunity. Having Alex Murphy, who went through a similar pathway, is inspiring. Now it’s my time to prove myself."
