The Game Awards 2024: Rumors, Announcements & What to Expect

The gaming world is buzzing with anticipation as The Game Awards 2024 approaches. Set to take place this Thursday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the 10th anniversary event promises to be a night of glitz, glamour, and, most importantly, groundbreaking announcements. While the awards themselves will undoubtedly be a highlight, the true allure lies in the potential surprises and trailers that developers and publishers may unleash.

Will GTA 6 Finally Get a Release Date?

Speculation is rampant online. Will Take-Two Interactive finally reveal the elusive release date for “Grand Theft Auto 6”? Will Skydance Interactive and Disney shed light on their closely guarded “Star Wars” game? Could Xbox surprise gamers with a first glimpse of downloadable content for the newly released “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” by MachineGames?

Keighley Teases Unadvertised Surprises

Geoff Keighley, the mastermind behind The Game Awards, keeps his cards close to his chest, although he hints at hidden gems that attendees and viewers can expect. “We always see the fake lists online…But what if there’s a whole set of other things out there?” he intriguingly suggests.

A Decade of Evolution

Over the last decade, The Game Awards has become an integral part of the gaming calendar, earning the trust of the industry to showcase major announcements. Kimmie Kim, executive producer of the show notes, “We’re working closely with the vast majority of game companies, always thinking ahead,” Kim says. “Publishers plan a year out to have their titles revealed during The Game Awards.”

Technological Innovation

The production quality of The Game Awards has consistently evolved to keep pace with the industry it celebrates. This year promises a visually stunning spectacle, with more LED screens than ever before, according to production designer LeRoy Bennett. “I constantly try to change the look of the show and the production within the format,” he explains.

Navigating the SAG-AFTRA Strike

The looming SAG-AFTRA strike presents a unique challenge for this year’s show. Keighley and his team are actively monitoring the situation and respecting the performers’ choices. “We’re learning about it as it evolves and are trying to be very respectful and hopeful for a positive resolution,” he says.

A Community Celebration

Despite its increasing prestige, The Game Awards has remained true to its indie roots. By remaining free and accessible on YouTube, it has fostered a unique sense of community and belonging within the gaming world. “There’s definitely people invested in it,” Kim observes. “It’s a friendship and partnership where this is a team, doing this together.”

A Timeless Celebration

Richard Preuss, director of The Game Awards, emphasizes that the show transcends mere competition. “The nice thing about this show from year to year is that there are these surprises, these special announcements,” he says. “It is a total celebration of the industry in a way that I don’t think other awards do. They celebrate, of course, the accomplishments of that year, which the Game Awards does — but there is a just a greater history within the show and it also always looks to the future.”

Join the excitement and tune in to The Game Awards 2024 this Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET, to experience the future of gaming firsthand!
