Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Aid Delivery Faces Critical Bottlenecks
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate, with families facing ongoing hardship due to limited access to essential aid and widespread displacement. The United Nations is working to deliver critical assistance, but dwindling supplies and restrictions on access are severely hampering efforts.
Aid Delivery Challenges and Supply Shortages
Recent reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlight the urgent need for increased aid to Gaza. Supplies of essential items like tents, bedding and basic necessities are rapidly depleting. Some humanitarian organizations are resorting to purchasing supplies from local markets to meet immediate needs.1
More than 400,000 liters of fuel were delivered on Tuesday, and seven truckloads of water, sanitation, and hygiene supplies were collected from Kerem Shalom. However, Kerem Shalom remains the sole operational crossing point for humanitarian and commercial cargo entering Gaza, creating a significant bottleneck.1 OCHA emphasizes that this situation is unsustainable for both humanitarian and commercial sectors.
While Israel announced the potential reopening of the Rafah crossing, this has not yet been implemented. The UN remains prepared to resume medical evacuations and support the return of people to Gaza once the crossing is operational.1
UNRWA and the Protection of Palestinian Refugees
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) plays a crucial role in providing assistance to Palestinian refugees. Established in 1949, UNRWA offers education, health care, relief, and social services, as well as infrastructure and camp improvements.23
As of January 1, 2020, UNRWA employed approximately 30,000 staff and operated with a budget of $806 million.3 The agency currently provides shelter for over 74,000 people in more than 100 schools-turned-shelters, including 85 displacement sites.1 Recent rains have exacerbated overcrowding and poor living conditions in these shelters.
Concerns Over Impunity and Escalating Conflicts
UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini has voiced concerns about a growing culture of impunity in the context of escalating conflicts in the Middle East. He warned that a failure to address abuses and uphold the rule of law could have global repercussions.1
Ongoing Needs and International Response
The UN and its partners have launched a $4.06 billion Flash Appeal for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, with 92% of the funds allocated to the humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip.1 However, significantly more aid is needed, particularly to support the health of pregnant and breastfeeding women, as approximately 15 women in Gaza are giving birth outside of hospitals each week without skilled attendants.1
The UN continues to call for safe, unhindered humanitarian access to ensure that those in need receive the support they urgently require.
