Scheffler Headlines Weather-Threatened Genesis Invitational
Riviera Country Club is bracing for a soggy start to the 2026 Genesis Invitational, with rain and wind expected to challenge golfers during the first round on Thursday. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite, but the unpredictable weather could shake up the leaderboard.
Genesis Invitational Round 1 Forecast
Golfers will face a 99% chance of rain Thursday morning in Pacific Palisades, California, according to The Weather Channel. While not as severe as earlier storms that impacted the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, heavy rainfall is still possible. Sustained winds of 10-16 miles per hour, with gusts up to 22 mph, are as well anticipated. Glenmuir.com notes that wind conditions exceeding 20 mph are generally considered “windy” in golf, requiring skill and practice to navigate.
Weather Impact on Future Rounds
The wind and rain are expected to lessen by Friday’s second round. However, earlier storms have already caused flooding at Riviera, raising concerns about course conditions and potential delays or interruptions. Daily Club Golf summarized the potential for stoppages and delays, and even possible postponements, based on course conditions and safety considerations.
The Genesis Invitational has faced weather disruptions before. In 2019, rain suspended play after 30 players teed off, resulting in a seven-hour delay and second chances for some golfers, as reported by Golf Monthly. Preferred lies are likely to be in place for the 2026 tournament, similar to the conditions at the recent Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Favorites to Win the Genesis Invitational
Despite the challenging conditions, the world’s top golfers are prepared to compete. DraftKings lists Scottie Scheffler as the favorite to win the 2026 Genesis Invitational with +305 odds. Rory McIlroy follows at +1275, and Xander Schauffele is third at +1950. Hideki Matsuyama, the 2024 champion, is listed at +2150.
The Field at Riviera
The 2026 Genesis Invitational boasts a world-class field, including Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. The tournament, hosted by Tiger Woods, features 72 players competing for a $20 million purse, with $4 million awarded to the winner, and 700 FedExCup points. A 36-hole cut will determine the top 50 plus ties, and any player within 10 shots of the lead will also advance. Eighteen of the top 20 golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking are participating.
