UGA Football Players Arrested on Reckless Driving Charges

ATHENS, Ga. — Two University of Georgia football players, linebacker Chris Cole and pass rusher Darren Ikinnagbon, were arrested on Wednesday night on misdemeanor charges of speeding and reckless driving, according to Athens-Clarke County Police Department records. The arrests raise concerns about a recurring issue within the UGA football program.

Details of the Arrests

Chris Cole, a rising junior, was arrested for reckless driving and speeding. He was released on a $26 bond according to 13WMAZ. Darren Ikinnagbon, a freshman, faced charges of reckless driving, speeding, and following too closely, and was released on a $39 bond as reported by 11Alive.

UGA’s Response

UGA Athletics released a statement acknowledging the charges: “We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering information. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time.” 247Sports reports that a UGA sports communication representative issued the statement.

Player Backgrounds

Chris Cole is expected to be a key contributor to the Bulldogs in 2026. In 2025, the 6-foot-2 linebacker recorded 59 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks as noted by 13WMAZ. Darren Ikinnagbon, a highly ranked recruit in the 2025 class, played in five games during his freshman season, recording two tackles.

History of Driving-Related Incidents

These arrests are the latest in a series of driving-related incidents involving UGA football players. 11Alive reports that at least 12 players, along with an assistant coach, have been arrested for reckless driving, speeding, or DUI since January 2023, including a deadly crash following the championship parade.

In a separate incident, Georgia backup offensive lineman Nyier Daniels and his mother were arrested in November 2025 after a high-speed chase. Daniels was dismissed from the team following the arrest according to ESPN.

Coach Smart’s Comments

Georgia coach Kirby Smart addressed the issue at SEC Media Days in 2024, stating, “I’ll be the first to admit we haven’t solved that issue…The incidents that have been happening off the field are not something we condone. It’s very unfortunate, ‘disappointing’ I guess is the best word.” as reported by 11Alive.
