GLP-1 Medications vs. Bariatric Surgery: Which Weight Loss Option is Right for You?
The growing prevalence of obesity has spurred significant interest in effective weight management strategies. Two prominent approaches – GLP-1 medications and bariatric surgery – are frequently discussed. St. Joseph Health experts are helping patients navigate these options, recognizing that the best choice is highly individualized.
Understanding GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications, including drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, have gained considerable attention for their impact on weight loss. However, their benefits extend beyond simply reducing weight. According to LaDoris Bowers, a Nurse Practitioner specializing in weight management with St. Joseph Health, these medications offer broader health improvements.
“It’s the health benefit that patients get when they’re on it,” Bowers explains. “It’s known to help normalize your cholesterol, your blood pressure, stabilize your glucose levels, and improve metabolic and hormonal health.”
GLP-1s are likewise proving beneficial for women experiencing perimenopause and postmenopause, and studies suggest they can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. These medications are generally considered appropriate for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ranging from 27 to around 50.
When is Bariatric Surgery an Option?
For patients with a BMI of 45 or higher, bariatric surgery often demonstrates greater success in achieving and maintaining weight loss. Bowers notes that she often prescribes GLP-1 medications to patients with BMIs in the 60s to help lower their BMI before considering surgery.
“The lower the BMI, the better the outcome,” she states.
Individualized Treatment Plans
The decision between GLP-1 medications and bariatric surgery is not one-size-fits-all. Bowers emphasizes that the optimal approach is determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account individual health profiles, BMI, and treatment goals.
St. Joseph Health provides comprehensive evaluations to help patients understand their options and make informed decisions about their weight management journey.
