Man möchte meinen, es bei dem Nova-Scotia-Duck-Tolling-Retriever-Rüden Indy mit einem der talentiertesten Filmhunde aller Zeiten zu tun zu haben. Doch der vierbeinige Protagonist in „Good Boy – Trust His Instincts” ist kein dressierter Profi, sondern der ständige private Begleiter des Regisseurs Ben Leonberg. Während der Pressetour betonte der Filmemacher immer wieder, dass er Indy während der Dreharbeiten nie das Gefühl geben wollte, an einem Filmset zu sein – sofern sich ein Vierbeiner dieser Tatsache überhaupt bewusst sein kann. It’s thus no surprise that his “acting” went viral as quickly after the first showings of “Good Boy” as that of his four-legged colleague Messi from “anatomy of a Fall.” The latter even made an appearance at the Oscars in 2024. Now,there’s even an open letter appealing to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider Indy at the upcoming awards ceremony. At the South by Southwest Film Festival, he already received the “Howl of Fame” award, official recognition for the “Best Canine Performance.”

Making a dog the emotional anchor of a (horror) film is certainly fraught with pitfalls. Excessive anthropomorphism can quickly diminish the creepy atmosphere. Nevertheless, the dog must be able to win over the audience; ultimately, he carries the film on his shoulders alone. Ben Leonberg undoubtedly benefits from the fact that his Indy is simply incredibly cute. When he crawls anxiously under the bed, observes his bewildered master, or bravely jumps through a window, you’ve long since lost your heart to the retriever and hope that everything turns out well for him. Indy’s extremely expressive facial expressions add to this.
