The Google Messages redesign started widely rolling out to the stable channel last week, and Material 3 Expressive is now available on the actual chat screen.

Like on the homepage, the message thread is now placed in a container with curved corners at the top. That background layer features the app bar with phone/video calling shortcuts, and the overflow menu. The bubbly wallpaper has been replaced by a solid color when using both light and dark themes.

Google Messages Gets a Refresh: Expressive Media picker and Wider Chat Rollout

Google Messages is receiving several updates aimed at enhancing the user experience, particularly when it comes to sharing media and enjoying broader chat features. These changes focus on making interactions more expressive and accessible to a wider audience.

Expressive Media Picker with Material 3

A key update is the revamped media picker. It now features Material 3 design principles, offering a more modern and visually appealing interface. The most noticeable change is the introduction of a button group at the top. This group dynamically changes its appearance based on the user’s selection, providing a more intuitive way to choose stickers, GIFs, or other media types. This dynamic morphing helps streamline the selection process and keeps the interface uncluttered.

Improved User Interface

The redesign also addresses usability concerns. The search bar has been repositioned lower on the screen, preventing it from appearing directly above the text input field. This subtle adjustment reduces visual clutter and improves the overall flow of the interface. There’s also a slight reduction in the prominence of Photomoji, likely to balance the focus across different media options.

Wider Chat Rollout

Beyond the media picker, google is expanding the availability of its wider chat features. This rollout aims to bring richer messaging experiences, including features like read receipts, typing indicators, and higher-quality media sharing, to more users. Wider chat relies on RCS (Rich Communication Services), the successor to SMS, offering a more modern and feature-rich messaging experience similar to other popular messaging apps.

What is RCS?

RCS is a modern messaging protocol that offers several advantages over traditional SMS. These include:

  • Higher quality Media Sharing: Send photos and videos without compression.
  • Read Receipts: Know when your message has been read.
  • Typing Indicators: See when someone is typing a response.
  • Group Chats: Enhanced group chat features.
  • Larger File Transfers: Share larger files than SMS allows.

Key Takeaways

  • Google Messages is getting a visual refresh with Material 3.
  • The media picker now features a dynamic button group for easier selection.
  • The search bar has been repositioned for improved usability.
  • Wider chat features, powered by RCS,are rolling out to more users.

These updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to improving the messaging experience within Google Messages. as RCS adoption continues to grow, users can expect even more advanced features and a more seamless communication experience in the future.
