Google’s Contact Sharing Feature: A New ‘NameDrop’ Competitor

Google to Launch Contact Sharing Feature similar to Apple’s NameDrop

Google is developing a feature that will enable users to share contacts simply by bringing two phones close together – mirroring Apple’s NameDrop, which debuted with iOS in 2023. Currently dubbed “Gesture Exchange,” the feature was discovered within the code of google Play services. Development is underway, but an official release date is still pending.

What it Can do and How it Works

Gesture Exchange (also referred to as Contact Exchange in the code) utilizes NFC (Near Field Communication) for sharing contact information. To share a contact, users bring their devices close together and select the desired information to send: photo, phone number, or email address. A “Receive only” mode is also available, allowing users to simply receive information without sharing any of their own.
