Gouke Moes: From Teacher and Provincial Leader to Dutch Education Minister

Gouke Moes, a Dutch politician representing the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), served as the Minister of Education, Culture and Science in the Netherlands from September 2025 to February 2026. His brief tenure in the demissionary Schoof cabinet followed a career in education and local politics, but was marked by controversy surrounding his responses to social issues.

Early Life and Career

Born on December 17, 1991, Gouke Moes initially worked as a metalworker before pursuing a career in education. He trained as a teacher between 2014 and 2018 and subsequently taught technical education at Campus VO Eemsdelta secondary school in Appingedam, starting in 2021.

Political Rise

Moes became involved in politics in 2021, joining the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB). He was elected to the Provincial Council of Groningen in March 2023 and quickly rose to become the parliamentary leader for the BBB in the council. In March 2025, he was appointed to the Provincial Executive of Groningen, where he held responsibilities for energy, digital infrastructure, internal organization, defense and sport.

Minister of Education, Culture and Science

On September 5, 2025, Moes was appointed Minister of Education, Culture and Science in the demissionary Schoof cabinet, succeeding Eppo Bruins after the departure of Bruins’ party from the coalition. His appointment was met with some scrutiny.

Controversy Over Social Media Posts

Prior to his ministerial appointment, Moes faced criticism for his responses to the vandalization of a rainbow crossing with swastikas. He expressed concern over political polarization “from both sides” on social media, a statement he later acknowledged needed different phrasing. He clarified that he did not equate the rainbow and the swastika, but rather sought to understand the motivations behind the actions of both groups involved. This led to parliamentary questions from GroenLinks-PvdA MP Lisa Westerveld.

Personal Life

As of 2025, Gouke Moes is married and has three children.
