Amidst concerns surrounding the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HPMV) in China, India’s Director General of Health Services, Dr. Atul Goel, has reassured the public, stating there’s “nothing to be alarmed” about.
Dr. Goel emphasized that HPMV is a common respiratory virus similar to others that cause colds. While it may lead to flu-like symptoms in very young and elderly individuals, India hasn’t reported any outbreaks.
“HPMV is like any other respiratory virus which causes common cold and in the very old and very young it could cause flu-like symptoms. However, we have analyzed the data of the respiratory outbreaks in the country. There have been no outbreaks of respiratory ailments,” Goel said.
He added that an increase in respiratory virus infections is typical during winter months. Indian hospitals, according to Dr. Goel, are adequately prepared with supplies and beds to handle such situations.
While assuring the public, Dr. Goel recommended standard precautions against respiratory infections. These include avoiding contact with large groups if experiencing a cough or cold, and covering coughs or sneezes with a handkerchief or towel.
“If someone has a cough or cold, they should avoid contact with large groups of people to prevent the spread of infection. Additionally, use a handkerchief or towel when coughing or sneezing,” he said.
He advised individuals to take over-the-counter medications for colds or fever as needed.
“Otherwise, there is no cause for alarm in the present situation,” he added.
Meanwhile, China has played down reports regarding the virus outbreak.
