Philippines Mobilizes Resources Amid Severe Tropical Storm Kristine

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is facing the brunt of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, which has caused widespread flooding and disruption in the Bicol Region. The national government has swiftly mobilized reinforcements and resources to aid affected communities.

Director Edgar Posadas of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed that rescue efforts are proving challenging in Bicol, the region hardest hit by Kristine’s torrential rains, even before the storm made landfall. While local resources are sufficient, Posadas explained that flooding hinders access to affected areas, particularly Naga City and parts of Camarines Sur.

Reinforcements On Their Way

To bolster relief efforts, the national government has dispatched reinforcement units from the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) in Lucena City, Quezon province, and Eastern Visayas. These units, equipped with personnel and essential supplies, are en route to Bicol as of Thursday, October 24.

Additionally, at least 17 military air assets are strategically positioned at Villamor Air Base in Manila and Cebu, ready to be deployed as soon as weather conditions permit. Posadas stated that the Philippines has also established communication with international allies, including the United States, to secure potential air asset augmentation if needed.

Kristine’s Path and Impact

Kristine made landfall in the Philippines early on October 24 and is currently traversing the Cordillera Administrative Region. Forecasts predict its exit from Luzon through the Ilocos Region by Thursday evening.

As of October 23, over 1.4 million Filipinos in Bicol alone have been affected by Kristine.
