Griekspoor Upsets Bublik to Reach Dubai Quarter-Finals
Tallon Griekspoor secured a significant victory at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Wednesday, defeating second-seeded Alexander Bublik 6-3, 7-6(4) to advance to the quarter-finals. This win marks Griekspoor’s first triumph over Bublik in five career meetings, ending a two-year wait for a rematch.
Griekspoor Snaps Losing Streak
The Dutchman broke Bublik’s serve early in the match, capitalizing on the return to dominate the first set. In a closely contested second set, Griekspoor demonstrated resilience, saving break points and ultimately prevailing in a tie-break with a score of 7-6(4). The match lasted 82 minutes.
Prior to this victory, Griekspoor had lost four previous tour-level matches against Bublik, including two tie-break defeats in Dubai two years ago. With this win, his head-to-head record against the Kazakhstani improves to 1-4.
Quarter-Final Opponent and Other Results
Griekspoor will face sixth-seeded Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals. Mensik defeated Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2, improving his season record to 13-3. Mensik recently upset Jannik Sinner in Doha and holds a 3-0 head-to-head record against Popyrin.
Other notable results from Wednesday include Arthur Rinderknech’s victory over fourth seed Jack Draper (7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4). Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Andrey Rublev, and Jiri Lehecka also secured their places in the last eight.
Medvedev defeated 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, while Auger-Aliassime overcame Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4. Rublev battled past Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, and Lehecka advanced to face Rinderknech.
Medvedev and Rublev Advance
Third-seeded Medvedev expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “I reckon [I’m moving in the right direction]. Two good matches [so far in Dubai]. Convincing in the score, which is sometimes more important. I have more time mentally to prepare for the next round and I’m looking forward to it.”
Rublev also commented on his hard-fought victory, saying, “I was just trying to do my job. Trying to play my tennis and keep doing the things I was doing. As soon as I had the chance to play aggressive, I tried to move to the net, to focus on my serve, to serve hard and put pressure on his return, which was not easy because he was serving super hard.”
