Grand Theft Auto 6 release date and file size
Rockstar Games will release GTA 6 on November 19, 2026, forcing players to confront hardware limits more than 13 years after the previous title, t3n.de reported.
Yahoo Tech reported that the download could exceed 200 gigabytes due to its immersive design and detailed world. Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed the file size, but earlier games set high precedents. Red Dead Redemption 2 required about 125 gigabytes of storage on console hard drives.
Console capacities shrink quickly under such massive software demands.
Playstation 5 and Xbox consoles typically start with one terabyte of internal storage, while the compact Xbox Series S offers only 512 gigabytes. Operating systems and system functions consume a portion of that capacity right out of the box. Installing a massive title like GTA 6 leaves very little room for additional games or system updates.
External USB drives cannot launch modern PS5 games
Playstation 5 hardware prevents players from launching modern games directly from standard external USB drives. External USB storage on the PS5 functions strictly as an archive for titles players want to store rather than play immediately. Moving games back to the internal SSD is required before launching them. Sony designs this workflow to bypass the speed limitations inherent in standard external connections.
Xbox Series X and Series S consoles handle external storage differently depending on the specific hardware generation. Older Xbox models permit direct play from external drives, but current generation consoles block direct USB gameplay for optimized titles. Microsoft solved this limitation through a dedicated expansion slot on the back of the console.
Seagate storage expansion cards and drives
A custom storage expansion card developed in partnership with Xbox plugs directly into the console to match internal speeds. Seagate manufactures this expansion card with a transfer rate of 3,000 megabytes per second to maintain low latencies and fast loading times. Amazon lists the Seagate expansion card in one and two terabyte capacities starting at 282.99 euros.
Sony consoles utilize different external hardware options designed specifically for archival use rather than direct gameplay. Seagate offers a 2.5-inch Game Drive featuring Playstation branding and a USB 3.0 interface. The Playstation-compatible Seagate drive costs 150.99 euros on Amazon in a two terabyte size, with a five terabyte option also available. Microsoft-themed versions of the Seagate drive are available on Amazon starting at 128.99 euros in capacities up to 20 terabytes.
Sandisk portable solid state drives
Sandisk produces an officially licensed external SSD built specifically for the Playstation 5. The white 2.5-inch drive matches the color scheme of Sony hardware and delivers speeds up to 1,000 megabytes per second. That transfer speed allows players to move archived games back to the internal console storage quickly. The Sandisk drive features an IP65 rating and drop resistance from heights up to three meters.
Amazon lists the Sandisk drive in one and two terabyte capacities starting at 200.99 euros. E-commerce price trackers show that the drive previously sold for 179 euros, suggesting buyers might wait for price drops. Connecting either external drive requires only a standard USB cable plugged directly into the console ports.
Storage upgrade questions for console players
Can you play Playstation 5 games directly from a standard external hard drive?
No, Playstation 5 hardware requires games to reside on the internal SSD for gameplay, meaning external USB drives serve only as storage archives.
How fast is the official Xbox storage expansion card?
The Seagate expansion card for Xbox Series X and S delivers a transfer rate of 3,000 megabytes per second to match internal performance.
What is the price of the Sandisk portable SSD for Playstation 5?
