LACMA Art+Film Gala Celebrates Modern Glamour and Creative Excellence
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Art+Film gala was a resounding success, raising a record-breaking $6.4 million. This prestigious event, a cornerstone of LACMA’s fundraising endeavors, embraced a modern take on glamour, diverging from the classic Hollywood aesthetic seen at the Academy Museum Gala last month.
Modern Glamour Takes Center Stage
A vibrant “Brat Green” trend dominated the red carpet, with stars like Kaia Gerber and Gabriella Kaefa-Johnson embracing the trendy color palette. Men opted for sleek white suits, reflecting the contemporary styling direction. Underwritten by Gucci, the gala showcased numerous looks from the brand’s creative director and gala committee chair, Sabato De Sarno.
The Gucci contingent included A-listers such as Kim Kardashian (sporting a purple stone cross once owned by Princess Diana), Cara Delevingne, Andrew Garfield, Colman Domingo, Vittoria Ceretti, and Laura Dern, along with both honorees for the evening.
Honoring Creative Visionaries
Simone Leigh, the renowned sculptor whose groundbreaking exhibition is currently on display at LACMA until January 20th, received the evening’s visual arts honor. Philanthropist Bryan Stevenson introduced Leigh, sharing his experience witnessing her 2022 Biennale exhibition in Venice. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Leigh expressed the significance of this moment, reminiscing about a time when her daughter declared she thought her mom was “cool”.
Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann received the evening’s film honor, introduced by his longtime friend and collaborator, Anna Wintour. Wintour delivered a candid and humorous tribute to Luhrmann’s extraordinary creativity and meticulous attention to detail, recounting anecdotes about their world travels and his dedication to his craft.
Luhrmann, clad in a striking blue velvet suit reminiscent of Gucci’s iconic ’90s era, dedicated his award to his wife and creative partner, Catherine Martin. They met as young adults, sparking a lifelong artistic collaboration. In his heartfelt speech, Luhrmann emphasized the interconnectedness of all creative disciplines, regardless of medium, ultimately striving to “reach out and touch people.”
A Sparkling Musical Finale
Charli XCX delivered a captivating solo performance, but the evening reached a fever pitch when her musical collaborator, Troye Sivan, surprised the audience by joining her onstage for their hit song “Talk talk.” The electrifying performance, despite the cool LA evening, left the audience buzzing with energy.
The LACMA Art+Film Gala was an unforgettable celebration of artistic excellence, charity, and the power of creative expression.
