A Billion-Dollar Betrayal
Guo Wengui, the self-exiled Chinese business tycoon and critic of the Chinese Communist Party, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on Monday, June 29, 2026. Guo was convicted of nine of 12 criminal charges during a seven-week trial that prosecutors said showcased his deception of thousands of investors in bogus deals.
From Social Media Influence to Federal Prison
U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres handed down the 30-year sentence in a Manhattan courtroom. Guo, also known as Miles Guo and Ho Wan Kwok, solicited investments in entities including GTV Media Group, the Himalaya Farm Alliance, and the Himalaya Exchange. Prosecutors said his ill-gotten riches fueled a lifestyle of extraordinary excess and indulgence, a gilded life of mansions, yachts, race cars, designer clothes and luxury furnishings.

A Systematic Betrayal of Supporters
A jury convicted Guo on nine of 12 criminal charges. Prosecutors argued the fraud was a systematic betrayal of supporters who believed they were contributing to a political movement against the CCP. The judge ordered Guo to forfeit $889 million in restitution. Prosecutors highlighted that the fraud cost over 1,000 people worldwide hundreds of millions of dollars.
Defiance in the Face of Evidence
During sentencing, Judge Torres noted that Guo “takes no responsibility for his actions and instead insists incredibly his conduct caused no loss and harmed no one.” Guo’s defense team argued that he was the victim of the Chinese Communist Party’s “grand, pervasive, and life threatening” pursuit of him. They claimed he was targeted by the CCP for exposing state corruption.
Political Credibility and Legal Consequences
The judge said he “preyed on those seeking to bring Democracy to China,” taking their money so he could live lavishly. Prosecutors noted his association with conservative political strategist Steve Bannon, with whom he announced a joint initiative to overthrow the Chinese government in 2020.
The Seizure of Assets
Following his sentencing, Guo remains in federal custody. The judge ordered Guo to forfeit $889 million in restitution. The judge’s ruling concludes a legal saga that followed Guo’s arrest and detention three years ago.
