Hallgrimsson’s Future in Doubt as ireland’s World Cup Hopes Fade
Heimir Hallgrimsson is in a arduous position with the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup hopes dwindling, according to RTÉ Soccer analyst Alan Cawley.
The Boys in Green suffered a 2-1 defeat to Armenia on Tuesday evening in Yerevan, meaning they now need at least one win over Portugal to have any chance of securing a play-off place for the 2026 tournament.
Hallgrimsson’s contract is set to expire at the end of the qualification campaign.
With the Euro 2028 campaign potentially next if Ireland misses out on qualification for the USA, Mexico and Canada, it truly seems unlikely the FAI will extend the Icelandic manager’s contract given his results so far.
Qualification for the Euros coudl be automatic as a host nation, though that isn’t guaranteed.
Even so, the governing body might find it hard to convince fans that Hallgrimsson deserves a new contract after recent performances.
A worrying trend for Ireland has been conceding the first goal in nine of thier last ten competitive matches.
The team has fought back at times, like last Saturday against Hungary, but Ireland has ultimately paid for defensive errors.
Speaking to RTÉ Sport, Cawley said: “Heimir wouldn’t be under any illusions. he was asked about his situation last night in the interview.
“He’d be fully aware. It wasn’t just the result, but how they lost that will cost him.
“He can’t defend that. He’s the manager, responsible for the approach and changes during the game.
“If you’re constantly falling behind, it’s almost impossible to win. That’s what we’re seeing. Ultimately, he’ll likely be sacked as of this. The World Cup campaign is effectively over after just two games.
“But I think the problems are much deeper than just Heimir Hallgrimsson.”
Cawley believes the issues within irish football are deep-rooted and difficult to fix.
