Haleiwa Family Navigates Flood Recovery, One Day at a Time
HALEIWA, Oahu – Residents of Haleiwa, on Oahu’s North Shore, are beginning the long process of recovery following significant flooding in March 2026. The Lucero family, longtime residents of Haleiwa Road, are among those salvaging what they can and rebuilding their lives, leaning on the support of neighbors and strangers alike.
Extent of the Damage
The Lucero ‘ohana (family) initially assessed the damage to their home a day after the floods, discovering extensive damage both inside and outside. They have since been working to recover belongings and begin repairs. Nan and Jasmine Lucero report losing approximately 60% of their possessions, but were fortunate enough to save some irreplaceable family photos.

“Hard to let go but at the finish, a lot of things that you seek to keep you have to let go,” Nan Lucero said. “It’s our memories. We’re a picture family. Big picture family.”
The family home sustained significant water damage, with water levels reaching approximately 20 inches in some areas. This has resulted in warped paneling and compromised electrical outlets. While the ceiling lights are functional, the floor-level outlets are currently unsafe to use and require an electrician’s attention.
Community Support
Despite the challenges, the Luceros emphasize the overwhelming support they’ve received from the community. Neighbors and volunteers have assisted with hauling debris and offering emotional support. The family expressed gratitude that the mud did not inundate their home to the same extent as some other neighborhoods.
Looking Ahead
The Lucero family is approaching the recovery process “one day at a time,” focusing on regaining their footing and rebuilding their home. They acknowledge the extensive work ahead, including repairs to the structure and electrical systems. They are thankful for the support received and remain optimistic about the future.
“We’re doing fine. One day at a time. Day by day. That’s what we can do, right?” Nan and Jasmine Lucero said.
