North Dakota Softball Embarks on Lone Star Showdown

The North Dakota softball team is primed for a test of fire as they venture into the heart of Texas for a demanding seven-day stretch against six opponents.

This rigorous schedule kicks off Tuesday afternoon in Commerce, Texas, with a first-ever matchup against the East Texas A&M Lions. While the Lions currently sport a 2-8 record, their pitching prowess shouldn’t be underestimated. Led by Kate Houser’s 18 strikeouts and 22.0 innings pitched, and Maddie Muller’s 16 strikeouts, the Lions present a formidable challenge for North Dakota’s hitters. Offensively, the Lions are spearheaded by Emma Rodrigues who’s swinging a powerful bat, boasting a .400 batting average with 12 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBI, and 2 home runs.

The Fighting Hawks aren’t unfamiliar with battles. They come into the trip riding the wave of a potent offense, averaging a staggering 22 runs through five games – the highest mark since 2018. The team’s offensive firepower echoes their performance in the early 2000s, amassing 48 hits, the highest total in the Division I era.

Leading the charge for North Dakota is senior pitcher Makaela Carr. Her dominant performances on the mound earned her the Kwik Star Summit League Softball Peak Pitcher of the Week award, making her the first Fighting Hawk to receive the honor since Adrianna Dilal in 2021. Carr struck out 17 batters across 15 innings in three appearances, showcasing her poise while maintaining a 1-1 record and a save.

Carr’s sustained excellence, alongside the contributions of a cohesive pitching staff, has propelled North Dakota’s pitching staff to 55th in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings. Freshman Tehya Armstrong, with a remarkable 1.75 ERA, leads the pitching staff, promising a bright future for the program.

Beyond Carr, North Dakota boasts a roster brimming with offensive talent. Freshman Quincie Chunestudey, Makenna Alexander, and Alaina Foreman have made indelible marks with their remarkable debuts, each registering their first career hits and contributing significantly to the team’s momentum.

North Dakota’s journey into Texas beckons with a blend of challenges and opportunities. While the formidable competition sets the stage for a grueling battle, the Fighting Hawks’ strong pitching, devastating offense, and a promising crop of freshmen talent coalesce into a force to be reckoned with
