Rutgers Shut Out by Monmouth, Looks Ahead to Drexel

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University men’s soccer defeated Rutgers 2-0 on Wednesday evening. The Hawks controlled the match, securing a decisive victory.

The team now sets its sights on their next challenge, a home game against drexel on Saturday, October 4th at 7:00 PM.

Rutgers Defeats Monmouth in Men’s Soccer Match, 2-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Rutgers defeated Monmouth 2-0 in a men’s soccer match played on September 27, 2024, at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn. The Scarlet Knights’ depth proved to be a deciding factor, according to Monmouth Head Coach Robert McCourt.

The first half was a defensive battle, ending in a 0-0 tie. Monmouth’s defense, led by goalkeeper Herman Johnsen, successfully kept Rutgers off the scoreboard. Johnsen has recorded at least three saves in each of his four appearances this season.Raul Garcia attempted a shot for Monmouth in the 28th minute, but it sailed high. rutgers maintained possession and pushed back into the midfield several times during the half.

Rutgers broke the deadlock in the 77th minute (76:59) with a goal from Dan Karsten off a set piece. Victor Andersson had a shot on goal for Monmouth in the 74th minute, but Rutgers goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton made the save.

Karsten extended Rutgers’ lead to 2-0 in the 86th minute (85:05) with his second goal of the night. Kevin DeCapua recorded a shot for Monmouth following Karsten’s goal, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize.

Rutgers finished the game with a 19-7 advantage in shots, putting five on goal to Monmouth’s two. The Scarlet Knights also had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Ciaran Dalton recorded two saves for Rutgers, while Herman Johnsen made three saves for Monmouth.

Monmouth started five freshmen in the contest, marking the second consecutive match and third time this season they have done so.
