German Pensioners Face Rising Health Insurance Costs in March 2026
Many German pensioners will see an increase in their health insurance contributions starting in March 2026, potentially straining household budgets. While the federal government attempted to limit increases, a significant number of health insurance funds have raised their additional contributions. Switching health insurance providers could offer substantial savings for some.
Contribution Increases for 2026
Despite efforts to stabilize costs, 35 out of 72 publicly accessible health insurance companies in Germany are increasing their contributions in 2026. BKK records the largest increase, at 1.1 percentage points, followed by energy BKK with a 1 percentage point rise . Other notable increases include:
- VIACTIV health insurance: +0.92%
- Techniker Krankenkasse (TK): +0.24%
- R + V BKK: +0.53%
- BERGISCHE: +0.84%
Financial Impact on Pensioners
A calculation by Verivox, a comparison portal, indicates that pensioners receiving the standard pension of 1,835.55 euros (based on 45 years of contributions with average earnings) could face additional annual costs of up to 121 euros. Pensioners with higher incomes may experience even greater increases, potentially up to 1,379 euros annually. This is due to an increase in the contribution assessment limit from 66,150 to 69,750 euros, impacting those whose pensions exceed this threshold.
The Benefit of Switching Health Insurance
Switching to a different health insurance fund can lead to significant savings. Verivox estimates that a standard pensioner switching from the most expensive to the cheapest fund could save 243 euros per year. For pensioners with incomes above the contribution assessment limit, potential savings could reach up to 771 euros annually.
Easier Switching Process
Since 2021, changing health insurance providers has become simpler, with a reduced tie-in period of twelve months (previously 18 months). Contribution increases now trigger a special right of termination.
Considerations When Switching
While switching can be beneficial, it’s crucial to carefully evaluate the benefits offered by different health insurance companies. Approximately 95% of health insurance benefits are legally standardized, but variations exist in additional services. It’s essential to determine which additional benefits are valuable to individual needs. Aljoscha Ziller, managing director of Verivox Versicherungsvergleich GmbH, emphasizes that not all additional services justify higher premiums, citing professional teeth cleaning as an example.
