Albon Out, Colapinto In: Williams Suffers Blow in Brazilian GP Qualifying

Williams Racing suffered a major setback in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix, with Alex Albon absent from the race due to a heavy crash in Q3. The team will now field rookie Franco Colapinto as his replacement.

Saturday’s qualifying session, originally scheduled for earlier but delayed due to persistent rain, saw several red flags disrupt the proceedings. Colapinto was the first to bring out a red flag, followed by Carlos Sainz in Q2. Lance Stroll’s crash then brought an early end to the session, controversially eliminating championship leader Max Verstappen. Fernando Alonso also collided with the barriers before Albon’s high-speed incident at turn one, where he was sitting in a strong P2 position.

Extensive Damage Forces Albon Out

Despite initial hopes of repairing the damage, Williams ultimately couldn’t get Alex Albon’s car ready in time for the race.

“It’s a heartbreaking day for the team,” said Williams team principal James Vowles. “We’re here to go racing and nobody wants to be in this situation. The most important point is that all the drivers who had incidents in Qualifying are okay, including Alex and Franco.”

He continued, “Despite the best efforts of our hard-working, talented and resilient team, there simply was not enough time to repair Alex’s car in time for the Grand Prix. It’s a bitter pill to swallow at the end of a tough triple-header, especially when both drivers showed tremendous pace this morning.”

“We will focus on maximising this afternoon with Franco and putting on a show for the incredible fans here in Brazil.”

Williams’ Constructors’ Battle Takes a Hit

The loss of Albon is a major blow to Williams’ fight for eighth place in the constructors’ standings against Alpine. With Ocon starting from fourth in the second row, Alpine now holds the upper hand in their battle.

Brave Start for Colapinto

Meanwhile, Colapinto will make his second appearance in Formula 1, hoping to make the most of this unexpected opportunity.

Sainz, who crashed during qualifying, will start the race from the pitlane after taking on a brand new power unit and gearbox for his Ferrari.
