Fiber Optic Cable Vandalism Disrupts Internet Service in Heilbronn
Residents in several districts of Heilbronn, Germany, are experiencing widespread internet outages due to deliberate damage to fiber optic cables. The incidents, suspected to be acts of vandalism, have caused damage estimated in the hundreds of thousands of euros and impacted hundreds of households.
Extent of the Damage
Network operator Deutsche Giganetz confirmed that fiber optic cables were cut at eleven distribution boxes in the Kirchhausen and Neckargartach districts on February 18th and 19th. Perpetrators reportedly gained access to the boxes using a universal key, allowing them to specifically cut the fiber optic cables.
Repair Efforts and Restoration Timeline
While the material cost of the damaged cables is approximately 300 euros, the overall repair costs are significantly higher, reaching a mid-six-figure amount due to the complex restoration process. Technicians are required to blow latest cables into the existing infrastructure.
As of Sunday, February 23rd, over half of the affected connections – at least 110 households – had been restored to service. Deutsche Giganetz anticipates completing all repairs within the next two days.
Police Investigation
The Heilbronn police are investigating the incidents as damage to property and are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the identification of the perpetrators.
Recent Trends in Vandalism
This incident is part of a broader pattern of vandalism targeting fiber optic infrastructure in the Heilbronn Franconia region, raising concerns about the security of critical digital infrastructure.
