Young Bryan Calvo Elected Mayor of Hialeah, Promising Change
Teh 27-year-old former councilor won elections in which 19.44% of the 90,167 registered voters distributed in 45 polling stations participated. “We are going to start a change to improve life in Hialeah,” Calvo told Diario las Américas when referring to his victory.
“It is a great victory and a commitment that I have with the residents to fulfill all the promises we made during the campaign. It is a great duty. And I feel that the people of Hialeah have given me a mandate to govern and I am going to do it well. I am not going to let them down.”
The elected mayor announced that in his first hundred days he will eliminate pensions for politicians, address the high cost of water – “that department needs to be restructured” – and create an anti-communist commission to combat “the money laundering that we are seeing here in the city of Hialeah from dictatorial governments.”

Likewise, he announced that he will promote a referendum to reform the Constitutive Charter and establish electoral districts, a proposal that, he said, seeks more equitable representation. “The city of Hialeah has grown too much. Today you can be the best councilor in the world, but you do not have the resources or the ability to represent the entire city. If you had a smaller area, you could be more faithful to your residents. That was my experience as a councilor,” he explained.
Calvo assured that his proposal could reach the ballot in August of next year. “We want residents, once informed, to make that decision,” he emphasized.
Regarding his youth, the mayor-elect said that “we are seeing a generational change in politics. People are anxious for someone young who does not come with commitments of the same politics. And that is what they are going to see in my management.”
In this context, he clarified that he is the first mayor of Hialeah to graduate as a lawyer.
On January 12, the young mayor will assume the administration of a budget of more then $500 million and will supervise more than 1,400 municipal employees.
Calvo graduated in Political Science from Harvard and Law from Florida International University (FIU) and worked as an intern in the White house with President Donald Trump during his first administration.
It is indeed not the first time that Calvo marks a milestone in Hialeah, at just 23 years old, four years ago he became the youngest councilor in the city’s history. During his time on the Council, he was involved in several confrontations with former Mayor Esteban Bovo over issues such as taxes, water management and the 911 emergency call center.
