Festive Weather Alert: 5 Popular Climbing Routes in Indonesia Remain Closed

Mountain enthusiasts in Indonesia, brace yourselves! The Ministry of Forestry has announced the continuation of climbing route closures on five prominent peaks due to the ongoing extreme weather conditions during the rainy season. This decision prioritizes the safety of adventurers amidst the unpredictable elements.

Impacting Hiking Paradise

Climbing routes on Mount Gede Pangrango, Mount Halimun Salak, Mount Merapi, Mount Merbabu, and Mount Rinjani, all managed by the Ministry of Forestry, are currently inaccessible. This news is sure to disappoint many eager hikers who have been eyeing these majestic mountains. The closure stems from valuable insights provided by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).

“The decision was made for safety reasons due to extreme weather,” emphasized Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.

Timeline Remains Uncertain

While the Ministry understands the desire to climb these popular peaks, it cannot yet confirm how long the closures will last. Minister Antoni assured the public, “We will announce the reopening when we receive updates from the BMKG and recommendations from PVMBG.”

However, he indicated that the closure period will be utilized to improve the mountain ecosystem, ensuring its well-being for future generations of hikers.

Good News From Semeru!

Amidst the closures, there’s a glimmer of hope for hikers seeking adventure in East Java. The climbing route on Mount Semeru, located within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, has been reopened. This follows warnings regarding hiking within a 3.5 km radius of the summit, restricting access only up to Ranu Kumbolo.
