Living History in Sept-Îles: 19th-Century Trading Post Characters at the Vieux-Quai
Visitors to the Sept-Îles Vieux-Quai can engage with local history this summer through a series of interactive performances featuring characters from the historic Old Trading Post (Vieux-Poste de traite). These historical reenactments, which run until August 14, are designed to immerse the public in the daily life and regional history of the 19th century.
Historical Programming at the Vieux-Quai
The initiative brings characters to the urban terrace near the Vieux-Quai park shelters every Friday and Sunday at 3:30 p.m. According to the City of Sept-Îles, these performances serve to highlight the region’s history and intangible heritage. The project is a collaboration with the Musée de la Côte-Nord.
By stepping into the roles of historical figures, the performers aim to illustrate the intangible heritage of the region. This effort is part of a broader municipal strategy to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the city’s incorporation. The program is funded through the Entente de développement culturel, a partnership involving the City, the ministry of Culture and Aluminerie Alouette.
Contextualizing Sept-Îles Heritage
This summer program is one of several efforts to highlight the historical narrative of the region. Earlier this year, on June 20, the city hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Mon Sept-Îles d’autrefois” (My Sept-Îles of the Past). Additionally, the city has installed a historical timeline and a collection of archival photographs at the Place des Marées to provide residents and tourists with a visual record of the city’s evolution.
